The Misty Forest Oracle

When Annette found Paradox, she already knew what she needed: someone who understood not only the language, but the intention behind it.
Annette Dahl is a landscape photographer with a deep love for misty woodlands. After the loss of her younger brother in May 2024 and the grief work that followed, she felt drawn to share what had helped her during that time to support others in similar situations.
By the following spring, an idea had sprouted: an oracle deck.
Using 36 of her own photographs and the messages they carried, she created The Misty Forest Oracle – a deck rooted in nature, gentleness and emotional reflection.
The guidebook and card meanings were first written in Annette’s native German. Once complete, she began translating the deck into English herself. Four intensive weeks were spent finding words precise and tender enough in a second language to hold what she had originally created.
“Since the content is quite spiritual, it is already not easy to find the right words in German and even more difficult in another language.”
Emotional investment
A year of grief, healing and careful translation had already been poured into the pages of the guidebook by the time Annette reached out.
The language needed to feel clear without losing its softness and sensitivity. The meaning needed to remain intact across both languages. And because the deck was intended to soothe, even small inconsistencies had the potential to interrupt the reader’s flow and state. For a deck created to guide people through change and uncertainty, the reader’s experience of the message matters as much as the message itself.
Annette wasn’t looking for someone to edit her words. She was looking for reassurance that what she had created still held together in English.
“I was hoping that what I had translated was not completely wrong, and that my carefully written text would not be changed too much.”
A serendipitous search
The Paradox website had only been live for six weeks when Annette’s enquiry came through.
There’d been no promotion, no referrals and no word-of-mouth recommendation behind it. Annette found my offering through an online search while looking specifically for a proofreader who understood spiritual material.
That mattered to her.
“I had a good feeling when I found you. I really was looking for someone exactly like you.”
Spiritual writing often relies on emotional and conceptual continuity. A sentence can be technically correct but still jar the reader and affect the trust the writer had built. In translated work, proofreading becomes less about correction and more about preserving and balancing clarity and tone.
And that matters to me.
The work behind the words
Reading Annette’s deck, your pace naturally slows. The voice lulls you alongside the ethereal woodland imagery she’s so beautifully captured.
This work went beyond spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Certain words were clarified, adapted to a more precise alternative or strengthened so they didn’t dilute the message. Moments of repetition that weakened rather than reinforced the message were highlighted. And for the Inner Child card, a pronoun shift from ‘it’ to ‘their’ created a subtle but important emotional difference.
Notes on the layout were offered to help the reader navigate the pages, and to elevate the appearance to match that of decks published through Hays House.
A style sheet also accompanied the proofed guidebook, documenting editorial and consistency decisions that Annette can refer to for her marketing content.
“I really appreciated that she not only corrected the language, but also understood the tone and what I wanted to express, which is not so easy with this kind of content.”
The shift
With Ivory Graphics lined up to print the deck, Annette was later offered the chance to showcase The Misty Forest Oracle at the Mind Body Spirit festival in London.
By the print deadline, the guidebook had been refined while retaining its essence.
“I now feel confident that no spelling or punctuation mistakes, and no unclear sentences, will distract from the reader’s experience.”
The English deck had unexpectedly improved Annette’s original German version as several suggestions carried across the languages. One card interpretation paragraph that hadn’t fully landed in English was carefully reworked by Annette to strengthen the original deck too.
“I applied almost all of your suggestions and even adapted the German version based on that.”
On reflection
Looking back on the process, Annette’s advice to other creators was simple:
“Trust the process and don’t hesitate. It is worth getting professional support. It will not take anything away from your work, but instead make it clearer and stronger.”
